    Marie Corelli

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 5, 2017)
There was one solitary watcher of the splendid spectacle. This was a man of refined features and aristocratic appearance, who, reclining on a large rug of skins which he had thrown down on the shore for that purpose, was gazing at the pageant of the midnight sun and all its stately surroundings, with an earnest and rapt expression in his clear hazel eyes.

  • The Sorrows of Satan

    Marie Corelli

language (Jovian Press, Jan. 25, 2018)
The Sorrows of Satan was one of the first modern bestsellers and was influential in establishing some of the major trends in twentieth-century bestselling fiction. The setting is London, 1895, and the Devil is on the loose. He is searching for someone morally strong enough to resist temptation, but there seems little chance he will succeed. Britain is all but totally corrupt. The aristocracy is financially and spiritually bankrupt; church leaders no longer believe in God; Victorian idealism has been banished from literature and life; and sexual morality is being undermined by the pernicious doctrines of the "New Woman." Everything and everyone is up for sale, and it takes a special kind of moral courage to resist the Devil's seductions.
  • The Mighty Atom

    Marie Corelli

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, April 18, 2018)
Marie Corelli’s novel from 1896, “The Mighty Atom”, is an attempt by Corelli to show the evils of Atheism. Her dedication reads: “To those self-styled “progressivists,” who by precept and example assist the infamous cause of education without religion, and who by promoting the idea borrowed from French atheism, of denying to the children in board schools and elsewhere the knowledge and love of God as the true foundation of noble living are guilty of a worse crime than murder.”
  • The Sorrows of Satan

    Marie Corelli

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 1, 2014)
Do you know what it is to be poor? Not poor with the arrogant poverty complained of by certain people who have five or six thousand a year to live upon, and who yet swear they can hardly manage to make both ends meet, but really poor,—downright, cruelly, hideously poor, with a poverty that is graceless, sordid and miserable? Poverty that compels you to dress in your one suit of clothes till it is worn threadbare,—that denies you clean linen on account of the ruinous charges of washerwomen,—that robs you of your own self-respect, and causes you to slink along the streets vaguely abashed, instead of walking erect among your fellow-men in independent ease,—this is the sort of poverty I mean. This is the grinding curse that keeps down noble aspiration under a load of ignoble care; this is the moral cancer that eats into the heart of an otherwise well-intentioned human creature and makes him envious and malignant, and inclined to the use of dynamite. When he sees the fat idle woman of society passing by in her luxurious carriage, lolling back lazily, her face mottled with the purple and red signs of superfluous eating,—when he observes the brainless and sensual man of fashion smoking and dawdling away the hours in the Park, as if all the world and its millions of honest hard workers were created solely for the casual diversion of the so-called ‘upper’ classes,—then the good blood in him turns to gall, and his suffering spirit rises in fierce rebellion, crying out—“Why in God’s name, should this injustice be? Why should a worthless lounger have his pockets full of gold by mere chance and heritage, while I, toiling wearily from morn till midnight, can scarce afford myself a satisfying meal?”

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 19, 2018)
Excerpt from The Young Diana: An Experiment of the FutureTruding, lustreless eyes the tip of her small nose to protest feehly against the injustice of being well-nigh walled from si t between the mas sive flabby cheeks on either si e of its never classic and distinctly parsimonious proportions. With over sleep and over-eating she had matured into a stupid and somewhat obstinate woman, with a habit of say'ilaig unmeaningly nice or nasty thingsz - she wo afiectionately to all and sundry, - to the mai who fastened her shoes as ardently as to a friend of many years standing, et she would mock her own guests behind their bac s, or unkindly criticise the physical and mental defects of the very man or woman she had flattered obsequiously five minutes before. So that she was not exactly a safe acquaintance, - you never knew where to have her. But, - as is often the case with these lacidly smiling, obese ladies, - everyone seemed to in a conspiracy to call her sweet, and dear and kind, whereas in very truth she was one of the most 881581) souls extant. Her charities were always carefully considered and bestowed in quar ters where she was likely to get most credit for them, - her profusely expressed sympathy for other people's troubles exhausted itself in a few moments, and she would straightway forget what form of loss or misfortune she had just been commiserating, while, d ite her proverbial clear and sweet at tributes, 0 had a sulky temper which would hold her in its grip for days, during which time she would neither speak nor be spoken to. Her chief interest and attention were centred on eatables, and she al wa made a point of going to breakfast in advance of er husband, so that she might select for herself the most succulent morsels out of the regulation dish of fried bacon, before he had a chance to look in. Husband and wife were always arguing with each other, and both were always wrong in each other's.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Thelma: A Norwegian Princess

    Marie Corelli

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, April 5, 2018)
Thelma: A Norwegian Princess is one of noted author Marie Corelli's first books. Corelli was a very popular writer of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, and enjoyed recognition as one of the most widely read authors of the day alongside H.G. Wells and Rudyard Kipling. This book allows the modern reader to enjoy the work of an often-overlooked great author.Thelma: A Norwegian Princess is a classic story about a forbidden love. Told over the course of three books, all included in this collection, the principal characters are Thelma GĂźldmar, a poor girl from an outcasted family, and Sir Philip-Bruce Errington, a member of a royal family. GĂźldmar's father is a pagan and she is a Catholic, which brings accusations of witchdom against the young girl from the largely Lutheran population.Corelli's style is accessible to all, which is something her work is often critiqued for. The subtext does not reach the depths in this novel as it does in many works that are considered on par with. However this does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book and only the strictest of critics will be disappointed.Ultimately, Thelma: A Norwegian Princess is a lovely read for those both familiar and new to her writing. A very worthwhile read, for a much under-appreciated author.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Sorrows of Satan is an 1895 Faustian novel by Marie Corelli. It is widely regarded as one of the world's first best-sellers – partly due to an upheaval in the system British libraries used to purchase their books, and partly due to its popular appeal.
